Pakistan Launches URAAN AI Techathon 1.0 to Drive Artificial Intelligence Innovation

The Ministry of Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives has officially launched “URAAN AI Techathon 1.0”, a nationwide competition aimed at engaging Pakistan’s youth in creating cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for key national sectors.

This event is part of the broader URAAN Pakistan – National Innovation Mission, which focuses on using AI to accelerate progress in healthcare, education, agriculture, industry, and governance. An online portal has been introduced for registration, serving as the main hub for applications, resources, event updates, and coordination.

A Milestone in Pakistan’s Digital Journey

Speaking at the launch, Planning Minister Professor Ahsan Iqbal called the Techathon a “historic milestone” for the country’s digital future. He emphasized that AI is not just a futuristic concept but a driving force reshaping economies worldwide.

“Pakistan will not stand on the sidelines of the AI revolution—it will emerge as a leader,” he said. The minister highlighted that this initiative is not merely a competition but a movement to channel youth innovation toward national development.

Building AI Capacity and Economic Growth

Iqbal underscored the importance of stability, policy continuity, and structural reforms to accelerate progress. He assured full government support for startups, universities, and technology parks in developing AI-driven solutions.

Aligned with the vision of URAAN Pakistan, the Techathon seeks to lay the foundation for Pakistan’s transformation into a trillion-dollar economy by 2035. The mission is built on five key pillars, with the Techathon contributing directly to e-Pakistan and youth empowerment.

He further noted that AI is being integrated into academic curricula, while national capacity-building efforts are underway to prepare young innovators for the digital future.

Harnessing Youth Potential

“Our youth have the same drive and creativity that built the world’s leading tech ecosystems,” Iqbal remarked. “Their ideas and vision are Pakistan’s most valuable resources.”

He outlined practical AI applications, such as predicting crop diseases, supporting doctors with medical diagnoses, and providing quality education to every child.

To strengthen this foundation, the government plans to introduce a national AI policy, establish a special task force, provide funding opportunities, and create centres of excellence. The minister urged young Pakistanis to think boldly, innovate, and showcase their talent on the global stage.
