Australia Expels Iranian Ambassador Over Alleged Anti-Semitic Arson Attacks

Sydney: Australia has expelled Iran’s ambassador after accusing Tehran of orchestrating two anti-Semitic arson attacks in Sydney and Melbourne. The envoy has been given seven days to leave, marking the country’s first diplomatic expulsion since World War II.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that the Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) uncovered reliable evidence linking Iran to the attacks, which targeted a kosher restaurant in Sydney and the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne last year.

“These were reckless and hostile acts planned by a foreign government on Australian soil,” Albanese said during a press briefing. “Iran tried to conceal its role, but our intelligence makes it clear these attacks were part of a broader strategy to create division and undermine social harmony.”

International Condemnation of Iran’s Covert Operations

Australia’s move follows a wider pattern of Western governments raising alarms about Iran’s alleged covert activities abroad. Just last month, 14 nations including the United States, Britain, and France condemned what they described as a sharp rise in assassination plots, abductions, and intimidation campaigns linked to Iranian intelligence networks.

Rising Antisemitism and Islamophobia in Australia

Although the arson attacks did not cause injuries, authorities warn that such incidents contribute to growing community tensions. Since the Israel–Gaza conflict erupted in October 2023, there has been a spike in antisemitic vandalism and arson against Jewish homes, schools, and places of worship across Australia. Reports of Islamophobic attacks have also surged during the same period.

Iran Rejects Allegations

Tehran dismissed Canberra’s accusations, insisting that antisemitism has no place in Iranian culture. A spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry told state media that Australia’s decision was politically motivated and warned that Tehran would respond with “an appropriate course of action.”

More Threats Under Investigation

According to Albanese, intelligence agencies suspect Iran may have been behind additional plots in Australia. He stressed that the government would continue to take strong action to protect national security and community safety.
