KP Flash Floods and Rains Claim 31 Lives, Injure 7 — Rescue Operations Underway

PESHAWAR, August 15, 2025 — Torrential rains and flash floods wreaked havoc across several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on Friday, leaving at least 31 dead and seven injured, according to Rescue 1122 officials. The worst-affected areas include Bajaur, Lower Dir, and Battagram, where multiple rescue operations are ongoing.

Monsoon Devastation Since June

Since late June, Pakistan’s monsoon season has caused widespread destruction, particularly in KP and the northern regions. According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), 325 people — including 142 children — have lost their lives and 743 have been injured nationwide due to floods, landslides, and rain-related incidents.

Bajaur: Cloudburst Triggers Deadly Floods

In Bajaur’s Salarzai tehsil, a sudden cloudburst in Jabrarai village caused flash floods that swept through homes and fields.
Rescue 1122 spokesperson Bilal Ahmad Faizi confirmed that 16 bodies have been recovered, while three injured victims received emergency treatment before being shifted to hospital. Seven people remain missing as District Emergency Officer Amjad Khan personally supervises the search with medical and diving teams working alongside locals.

Battagram: Homes Destroyed, Dozens Missing

Battagram’s Neel Band area, located near the Mansehra border, suffered heavy losses after overnight lightning strikes and rain destroyed five houses. Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Saleem Khan reported 10 confirmed deaths and 16 missing residents.
Rescue teams from Rescue 1122, police, and community volunteers are battling poor weather and damaged communication networks to continue search operations in Neel Band, Sarim, and Malkal Gali.

Lower Dir: Roof Collapse Kills Five

In Suri Pao village, Lower Dir, heavy rainfall caused a roof to cave in, killing five and injuring four others. The rescue team endured a three-hour trek through flooded paths and damaged roads to reach the site.

Northern Pakistan Also Hit

The disaster follows Thursday’s widespread destruction in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), and parts of Abbottabad. In AJK’s Sarli Sacha village, a landslide buried six members of a family. Other rain-related incidents killed at least two women in Bagh and Sudhnoti. In GB’s Ghizer district, flash floods claimed eight lives, leaving two missing and destroying several villages.

Authorities have warned of continued heavy rainfall in the coming days, urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert.
