PTI Faces Criticism Over Decision Not to Appoint Opposition Leaders Ahead of By-Elections
Political analysts have warned that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) could be committing a “serious political misstep” by refusing to appoint new opposition leaders in both the Senate and the National Assembly, even on an interim basis.
Observers argue that leaving these key parliamentary positions vacant would allow the government to tighten its grip on the legislature. This move could also give ruling authorities unchecked power in making appointments to crucial constitutional offices, potentially shifting the balance of power during the ongoing political crisis.
On August 8, after the removal of its opposition leaders from both houses of parliament, PTI announced that it would not be nominating replacements. Instead, the party declared it would challenge the decision in court.
Following the announcement, PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan told Dawn that he planned to file a contempt petition. He argued that the move to declare his seat vacant violated a Peshawar High Court (PHC) ruling, which had barred the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) from proceeding with his disqualification.
As per the National Assembly rules, the Speaker is required to recognize as Leader of the Opposition the member who commands the greatest numerical strength, subject to verification of supporting signatures. Any member not listed in the initial proposal may still be counted if they later endorse it by signing in person.
With by-elections looming, the PTI’s refusal to fill opposition posts has sparked intense debate. Critics say this strategy could weaken the party’s influence in parliament and limit its ability to challenge the government effectively.
